Jewelry Care Guide
Jewellery Care Tips... here we go!
To lessen wear and tear best to avoid...
- spraying pieces (i.e. perfume, hairspray)
- showering
- sweating
- gardening
- sleeping
- swimming
- sports
... the above elements can erode the metal and/or damage the stones.
Jewellery will always need a clean every now and then (think skin cells). Here are some things that could work...
- hot soapy water
- a soft toothbrush
- soft cloth
- for stubborn tarnish you could try tomato sauce, vinegar, lemon and salt, toothpaste
- aluminium baking paper, over with hot water, add baking soda and soak
- ultrasonic cleaners may not be suitable, check the hardness of the stones and settings, the vibrations may loosen these
... oxidation and tarnish are caused by exposure to sulphur in the air.
How to store your jewellery...
- place a silica sachet in your jewellery box
- air tight jewellery box
- soft padding
- keep necklaces separated
- keep necklace closures linked to avoid tangles
Metal can wear away, especially rings on the sides with the constant rubbing of fingers. Claw settings can get caught on things. Softer stones can crack if knocked against a hard surface.
Keep an eye out for loose stones and if you see that one is a bit loose a trip to the jewellers may be needed to tighten or replace the setting.
If I think of anything else I'll add it here. And if you have any suggestions please let me know!
